A Crack In The Dam

Mobile advertising is a big buzz word now with everyone trying to say they’re doing it, many projecting numbers that would redefine the telecommunications economy and very few who really understand that they’d better make it worth our while, i.e., give value to the consumer. An interesting article in InfoWorld titled: Mobile ads: The next Internet gold rush?
talks about how marketers are “licking their chops” at the prospect of being able to target their ads in a highly personal way. It also mentions some wireless services who are giving free SMS text messaging, free minutes and even free wireless service in exchange for ads.

My opinion, once this gets started, it’ll be impossible to turn back. The cracks are showing in the dam and the floodgates are about to open where mobile services will be highly or completely subsidized through advertising. We’ve seen the model before!
